In Yolo County, 21.7% of children are food insecure and nearly 54% qualify for free or reduced meal programs at school. With the number of food insecure children growing, Yolo Food Bank is taking a proactive approach to provide youth with nutritious food. Through Kids Farmers Market (KFM), Yolo Food Bank hopes to provide youth with ongoing access to fresh fruits and vegetables through a fun, interactive farmers market-style distribution.
Kids Farmers Market provides a free weekly after school farmers’ market for over 700 to 875 preschool and elementary school students at seven schools in Yolo County. This program allows students the opportunity to use play money to “purchase” up to 10 pounds of produce from an onsite market, to learn about and sample the available fruits and vegetables, and to take home the produce, recipes, and other information about healthy living.
