Madison Community Commitee (MCC)
Madison Community Committee (MCC) is one of our partners located in Madison, an unincorporated town 10 miles west of Woodland. MCC was established in 2009 by a small group of concerned residents who wanted to pursue opportunities to support and improve their community. Madison Community Committee’s mission is to create and maintain a communication link between the unincorporated town of Madison, local governments, the State of California, and any other agent that has an effect or mutual benefit on the community. After receiving their non-profit designation, they began a partnership with Yolo Food Bank in 2016 to create a food pantry that would help supplement the food needs of Madison residents.
MCC’s food pantry has grown significantly in less than a year of partnership with Yolo Food Bank. MCC applied and was accepted to be a distribution site of the Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP). With the help of EFAP, the MCC’s food pantry is able to keep their shelves stocked with nutritious items that their residents may choose from during their distributions on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. The food pantry also obtains high need items from the Yolo Food Bank warehouse which goes to serve the on-average 23 families a month while also making available nutrition education information.
Initially funded by the Heitman Family Foundation and with the help of community volunteers, MCC has begun to help shape their local community. By working with the Yolo Transit Authority and the Madison Service District, the committee relocated a bus stop with shelter and lighting to better serve the rural areas of Yolo County. The MCC has also worked with the Yoca Dehe Wintun Nation to improve the Madison Park with the addition of permanent benches, tables, trees, and the improvement of the soccer field.
Currently, MCC is in the process of applying for grants and soliciting donations to purchase refrigeration and freezer units. With this purchase, the food pantry can distribute perishable products on a regular basis. Since their food pantry’s inception, Yolo Food Bank has worked closely with Madison Community Committee to offer guidance and to work towards alleviating hunger in Madison and its surrounding rural area.
Cheryl Barnett, Food Closet Coordinator of MCC has these words to say about working with Yolo Food Bank, “Yolo Food Bank has assisted us tremendously with organization and operation of our food closet. They are always there to provide whatever assistance is needed.”
